In a season where constant movie news and trailers are being released, nowhere to be found is footage of any kind from Power Rangers.
Power Rangers has played on the heart-strings of eager 80’s and 90’s babies. It is among the pinnacle of nostalgia for them, who grew up watching the then revolutionary television show and eventually, movies. Anyone can type in “Power Rangers” in google and see it littered with articles and pictures teasing its return. Despite that, bringing up Power Rangers now is met with tremendous moans and lengthy complaints because of one monumental element missing: a trailer and any sign of one coming soon. That is a bad, not just from the casual fans who watch movies on their own volition, but from those who righteously follow films of this nature. Interest is slipping quickly, and without anything for fans to lay their eyes on, here’s why:
No Trailer, No Buzz: Simply put, teasers and trailers are necessary for this reason alone – they keep people talking. Conversations about films, especially after the release of a teaser or a trailer, create an atmosphere around a product that remains intact even until the next trailer. They play a part in getting people excited about what’s to come. Word-of-mouth is still in the promotion business and still a staple in effective marketing to this day. When a movie like Power Rangers, which is quickly approaching its release date, still has nothing to show for itself except casting news and pictures, it begins to halt its own progress among fans and leaves them relatively unsatisfied with what they have. This lack of satisfaction from movie-goers can easily lead to contempt (happening as I speak) and even silence, which can make or break a film entirely.
Bottom of the totem pole: There are some major, highly anticipated films in the comic/fantasy genre scheduled for 2017. Wonder Woman, Star Wars, and Spider-Man are a few that take up that mantle. Many of them already have at least a principle teaser out or have taken major strides to keep fans invested and because of that, Power Rangers is at risk of being swept back to the furthest corner of entertainment and given the spot at the bottom of the totem pole. Power Rangers does have a lot of factors on its side. It’s a nostalgia based film. It has newness about it even as a remake and it is something that many were skeptical they would ever see again. The movie has given people a reason to care, but in this generation, it is not enough to just get people to care. They have to be invested for the long haul. Power Rangers is in need of a serious teaser because buzz is starting to die down and fans are becoming too impatient to care each day they have to imagine what this movie offers.
Concerns of Quality: For anyone who follows movies, a huge concern is for the production to not be consistent or timely. That can be costly. And fans want Power Rangers to be something that will give them reasons to leave the theaters satisfied. No one, not even me, wants them to put together poorly produced material for the sake of time, BUT if there was ever a moment to get something out, it is now. People are in a place where they are not sure if they should put too much energy into this film. For Unfortunately, there are questions being asked that are not getting answers. It’s creating a lot of doubt towards the worthiness of this film. Power Rangers is in crisis mode and needs to put something out that is good to let movie-goers know that there is nothing to worry about, that they are up to speed, and that they have everything under control.
Until a trailer of some sort is released, Power Rangers is going to be met with a lot of criticism and rightfully so. It desperately needs one if it intends to compete with the other blockbusters of 2017. While some believe this may be a clumsy attempt to capitalize on fans born in the 80’s and 90’s, this film could very well shape up to be a success and prove that there was a lot of care put into it. Hopefully there is a push for a trailer that will show us a clear indication as to where this movie is headed.
